Car-Tech works with Vehicle Management Services, a local “car donation”
management company, to assist donors in the process of donating a vehicle to charity.
The advantages of vehicle donations are numerous and include:
1)
Enabling you, the donor, to claim a tax deduction as your
vehicle donation is a Charitable
Contribution of Property per IRS guidelines.
2)
A simple, rewarding and zero-cost method of removing your
vehicle when it is no longer needed.
3)
The tax savings could result in a greater return than
advertising and selling a vehicle privately or trading-in to an auto dealer.
How it works:
Donating a vehicle will not cost you anything. We will setup everything over the
telephone when you have the Certificate of Title in your possession and we can
usually pick up within 1-2 business days, so it happens fast! You do not have
to be there when the vehicle is picked up, so if you work or have other
obligations, you need not be present. Your vehicle will be towed to an auto
auction and sold to raise money for the charity. There are many charities from
which you may choose (click
here to view a list) and hopefully one of
the charities will be meaningful to you! The transport company will leave a
receipt for you at the time of pickup and a second receipt will be mailed to
you after the vehicle is sold at auction. This second receipt is yours to file
with your taxes and conforms to all IRS requirements. The vehicle donation
process is that simple!
IRS
Guidelines:
(Please note: The
information listed below can be found in greater detail via IRS publication
#526 “Charitable Contributions” which can be accessed at their website
www.irs.gov)
The IRS placed
new guidelines for donated vehicles into effect in January of 2005. Vehicles
which are donated to charity and
sold as a fund raising effort must meet the following criteria:
1)
When you donate any vehicle, you may claim the smaller of:
a) $500
- or -
b) the Fair Market Value.
2)
If the vehicle sells for more than $500, the donor may claim
the sale amount as the Gross Proceeds
and must submit a receipt from the charity which states: the selling price; the
date of the donation; a reasonable description of the vehicle; the Charity’s
Name, address and Tax ID number and a statement certifying the vehicle was sold
“at an arm’s length” transaction to an unrelated buyer.
3)
As before, you may only claim the vehicle donation for the
tax year in which the vehicle is donated. Some people think that charitable
contributions can be treated like IRA contributions (ie: you can make an IRA
contribution up to April of the following year, but claim the deduction for the
previous year). This is NOT the case with charitable contributions. The year in
which you make the vehicle donation must be the same as the tax year you are
filing.
LIST OF CHARITIES:
These
are the charities that may benefit from your donation. Please review their
information and use it to decide which will receive proceeds from the sale of
your donated vehicle.
